- Cases: Cases are the visual representation of the actual process that occurs. For example, if a business has made a transaction the simple case would be 'transaction.' The case must play a distinct function within a system, not a generic function. A function that plays no real role in the way the business operates should not be included as a case because it had no real interaction with the outcome. To identify a case within a business setting, list all of the functions that occur. Next, look to narrow down the functions so that only the vital ones are left.

One more key element of UMI diagrams isn't so much an element as it is a restriction. System boundaries are the restrictions which keep all the businesses actors and cases within realistic boundaries. Since no system can have infinite functionality boundaries must exist to keep it accurate.

Most of the diagrams under this genre of software programs are after one goal: figuring out what makes a system function properly. Businesses often rely on the help of a UMI diagram to discover which employees are on track with their tasks and which ones are falling behind. Since efficiency is the goal of most organizations a UMI diagram is crucial in determining just how to make it more efficient.
